Today is a special day. Today is December 29, 2016. 61 years ago today a little baby named John Arthur Cox III was born in Philadelphia, PA. However, the world knows this man better by the name Chubby Cox.
Chubby Cox was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the eighth round of the 1978 NBA Draft out of the University of San Francisco. Cox didn’t make a NBA roster until 1982-83 though in which he played in seven games for the Washington Bullets scoring 29 points and grabbing ten boards — he just got that career double-double. As for his physique, Cox was anything but Chubby. He was 6’2″, 180 lbs. and was a prolific scorer during his time in the Continental Basketball Association. What matters most though is this basketball card right here.
This is the only visual record that there was a man named Chubby Cox. Like other great sports icons such as Rusty Kuntz, Dick Felt, DeWanna Bonner, and Ivana Mandic, Chubby Cox is solely known by the general populace for his unfortunate — and seemingly voluntary — combination of first and last name.
But what you may not know about Chubby is that he comes from a long bloodline of basketball. If you watched any of the U.S-Venezuela Olympic match-up in Rio this summer, then you may have noticed a point guard on Venezuela named John Cox. This is the son of Chubby Cox who wisely decided to go by his given name of “John” instead of Chubby Cox Jr. During this game, Marv Albert was apparently enamored with Chubby Cox and just couldn’t stop saying John “Chubby” Cox.
Something Albert did mention a couple times while gushing over Chubby was his nephew. Chubby’s sister is the wife former NBA player Joe Bryant who is of course the father of the great “Black Mamba” Kobe Bryant. So there you have it. Chubby Cox, basketball card legend and uncle of Kobe Bryant. Happy 61st birthday Chubby.
