That time Nick Carter wore a Hardy Nickerson jersey in a Backstreet Boys video

Akin to “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego,” one of the 90’s greatest mysteries was why Nick Carter once wore a Hardy Nickerson football jersey in the Backstreet Boys’ “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” music video.

Ok, so maybe it’s not one of the 90’s greatest mysteries to most people. There’s a 99% chance that you knew nothing of Hardy Nickerson jerseys and Backstreet Boys videos before clicking on this, but that’s what Divac’s here for….to bring up topics of discussion that you never thought you cared about. Somebody needs to get to the bottom of the truth behind one of the most under-the-radar mysteries of our generation!

Quick refresher on who Hardy Nickerson is. He was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker of the 90’s that wasn’t Derrick Brooks.

Nickerson was actually quite a good player who was named to five Pro Bowls in his career and was an important member of those ferocious Buccaneers defenses of the late 90’s under Tony Dungy. He’s now the linebackers coach for the Buccaneers.

However, we aren’t here to talk about the extraordinary career of Hardy Nickerson. We are here to talk about Nick Carter, the Backstreet Boys, and that over-sized Hardy Nickerson jersey.

Nick Carter — probably the only Backstreet Boy that you can name — is now somehow 35-years old, but as an eight- and nine-year old he would perform at halftime with the Tampa Bay Bucs cheerleaders as part of a dance troupe. This led to Buccaneers super fandom….and who was one of his favorite players? Hardy Nickerson of course:

“The Bucs were right on the incline at that time and I was just so proud of them,” Carter said. “I had to rep them. We had just gotten our new colors and jerseys, and I had to represent my team and Tampa in the video. Hardy Nickerson was one of my favorite players at the time. It’s so cool that he’s back coaching the Bucs [linebackers]now. I love him being down there on Lovie Smith’s staff. It’s awesome.”

So now you know why Nick Carter wore a Hardy Nickerson jersey in the Backstreet Boys’ “Everbody (Backstreet’s Back)” music video. That really wasn’t hard to solve. Case closed. You can now go about the rest of your day.
